Congregational Life Teams

Advent by Candlelight

Advent by Candlelight is a yearly event for women over age 13 to come together and spend time  in peaceful self reflection and fellowship to prepare our hearts for the Advent season. Hostesses put together beautifully decorated tables complete with an abundance of candles. The entire evening is spent in the dark with the candles lit. The evening starts with time for guests and hostesses to mingle and look at all of the creative tables that get put together. Then, after some time for hostesses and guests to share some dessert and snacks, the program commences. The program typically consists of special musical selections as well as a guest speaker. The evening closes with some caroling and prayer.

This evening is a fantastic way for women to not only get into the Advent spirit, but to meet other women of the church, grow in faith, and have some fun! All women are welcome to sign up to host a table of their own friends and family, host a table of guests assigned to them, or sign up to be a guest assigned to a table!  If you have any questions about Advent by Candlelight, please contact Maureen Braatz.

Birthday Greeting Callers

In the beginning of 2010, the Birthday Greeting team was not a team at all, but one of the members of our congregation, Scott Miller. Scott started calling members of our congregation on their birthday; some he knew, other were friends he hadn’t met yet.  He would greet them warmly and find out how their day was going. He would end the conversation with a  hearty “Happy Birthday, God’s blessing to you.” Scott Miller died on February 15, 2013. Scott’s wife, Patricia, wanted us to carry on the birthday calling in Scott’s memory; thus the team was formed.

The team currently consists of four members. The church office provides a list of names and phone numbers for those members having birthdays that month. The team members alternate the months of calling.  If you are interested in becoming a Birthday Greeting Caller, please contact Royce Kreul.

Care Callers

The Care Calling Ministry began at St. John’s over 30 years ago under the initiative of Ilah Breitbach.  The Care Calling Team meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 9:15 a.m. Their visits include individual homes of shut-ins, as well as several nursing homes and assisted living/care facilities. During their visits, they offer Holy Communion if that is desired. They also provide the devotional booklets Christ in Our Home and/or The Upper Room in regular and large print as requested. The minutes of their meetings and visits are recorded and go to the Church office and each Care Caller.

New members are always welcome. Please contact Rose Lehnherr or Barbara Newhouse.

Church Chow and How

Our mission is to provide fun, fellowship, and service to St. John’s. We share our time and talent by preparing and serving food.

Church Chow and How is always open to anyone who would like to cook and share favorite recipes, and most of all, have fun preparing them.  Please contact John Carter.

Each month we host an Ethnic Food Night. The host plans a menu and provides the history or back-story of the significance of the foods to be prepared. We prepare the recipes together and then enjoy eating the results.

Church Chow and How also serves the congregation with time and talents which included:

  • Hosting the food stand for the Big Sale
  • Craft Fair food stand and bake sale
  • Lenten Suppers
  • Holiday Cookie Bake-off and Sale
  • Fall Kick-Off in September
  • Other Special Events as needed

Funeral Committee

When a funeral takes place at St. John’s, the family of the deceased may request to have a luncheon after the service. The Funeral Committee is a team of ladies that works to prepare those luncheons. If you are interested in serving in this way, contact Sharon Kracke or Sheila Andersen.
