Ministry Teams

Communications Team

The Communications Team was formed in 2013. Its purpose is to look at how we currently communicate (within groups, within the congregation, with the community) and determine ways to improve and strengthen that communication. The team looks at the processes currently used to disseminate information and works to create a more effective and efficient way when appropriate.

Some of the team’s bigger projects include starting a Facebook page for the congregation, revamping St. John’s website, creating a Leadership Directory and assisting with various improvements related to the announcements and newsletter.

The Team’s big projects for 2014 include more work on the website, improved use of the Living Bulletin Board (screen in the Gathering Area), continued efforts on announcements/newsletter and a Visitor’s packet for the Welcome Center.

This team is looking for additional members! If you are interested in learning more or joining, please contact Rachel Berens-VanHeest.

Congregational Life Ministry Team

The purpose of the Congregational Life Ministry Team is to enhance our life in Christian community (koinonia) with particular attention to integrating new members within our fellowship while fostering our life together. They meet at the church on the 3rd Monday of the month from 7-8:30pm. The Congregational Life Team looks to support emerging ministries of St. John’s that support our life in community and foster deeper relationships within the congregation. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please contact Pastor Paul or Lori DuPuis.

Education Ministry Team

The Education Ministry Team is responsible for the ongoing Education and Faith Development of people of all ages at St. John’s! The Education Team generally meets on the first Monday of the month at 6:00 p.m.  New members of our team are welcome at any time!

Family Ministry Team

The Family Ministry Team started in the spring of 2014. The team’s focus is to facilitate meaningful social, educational and spiritual connections among our families. They work to try to strengthen family-centered spiritual growth, faith sharing and faith-full living.

Typical events include outdoor campfires, bowling and ice skating, Game Night in January, movie nights and more.

The Family Ministry Team typically meets on the first Monday of the month at 7:30pm.  This team is looking for new members, especially men, to help plan events. Once the event is planned, we try to create space for team members to participate and enjoy the event with their families.

Contact Jen Kooistra, Director of Youth, Family, and Education Ministries, for more information.

Finance Team

The Finance Team’s Mission statement is: “To serve as spiritual overseers of the financial affairs in accordance with the mission of the church.” The finance team is made up of representatives from committees that report to the church council and other members representing the congregation. They meet the second Thursday of each month.

Their main functions are to prepare and to monitor the annual church budget that has been agreed upon by the congregation. Beginning in October, the budget request for monies to be spent come from the pastors and various committees. Members of the congregation with requests to be considered for the budget make those requests through church committees and Church Council members. All budget requests are then submitted to the Financial Director by October 31. The Financial Director then submits a preliminary budget to the finance team for review at the November meeting.

The finance team sends the budget, along with their suggested budget changes, to Church Council for review at their November meeting. At the December finance meeting, the Financial Director presents the numbers for projected income and expenditures for the coming year. Using these numbers, the finance team submits its proposed budget draft to the Church Council for approval.

Usually, several meetings are required between the two committees before council gives its final approval. This projected budget is presented to the congregation for approval at the annual meeting.

Health Ministry Team

The mission of the Health Ministry Team at St. John’s Lutheran Church is to actively engage in the health and healing of the church through the promotion of body-mind-spirit health and well-being within the context of the needs, values, beliefs and practices of its members.

Joanne Gladden is the chair of this team. Forums are presented about eight times a year between services. A variety of topics are covered in these forums. The group’s goal is to choose topics related to supporting positive health, wellness and disease prevention.

Three to four times a year, Lunch and Learn forums are held; lunch is provided at 11:30 a.m. with speaker to follow from noon-1 p.m.  The topics for the Lunch and Learn are chosen in accordance with the needs and interest of our church members. The Veteran’s Day Recognition/Brunch is one of the many other educational and support services provided.

The members of this team meet on an as-needed basis, but very flexible schedule. The Health Ministry team welcomes any new members who would be interested in serving on this very rewarding service team.

Property Team

The Property Team consists of 4-7 members and meets once a month.  The team is a very active one and fulfills an important role in the overall running of the church.  The primary purpose of the team is to arrange for upkeep, maintenance and repair for all church buildings and grounds. The members work together to plan and organize spring and fall “clean up” days and any other special projects. They also secure bids for capital repairs/improvements to church properties and help arrange for purchase as approved by Church Council and Finance.

On an annual basis, members establish and maintain an inventory of all property of the congregation. The minutes of the meeting are recorded and sent to the Church Office and the Church Council. At the request of Church Council, a budget is prepared by the team and submitted for approval by the Council and then by the congregation.

Stewardship Team

The Stewardship Team works hard to increase the congregation’s awareness of the gifts God has given us, and encourage members to use their time, talents and treasure in the service of God’s Kingdom.

Worship Ministry Team

The Worship Ministry Team continues to emphasize and improve worship planning, music ministries, worship environment, service structure, and increased individual participation of worship volunteers. If you are interested in serving on the Worship Ministry Team, contact Ondra Williams.

Youth Ministry Team

The Youth Team works to plan activities for the High School (and sometimes Middle School) Youth at St. John’s. The youth participate in activities not only at St. John’s, but also in the community. They have the opportunity to get involved at the Synod and Church-wide levels as well.

Planning for our attendance at the triennial ELCA Youth Gathering and the fundraising that goes with it, is a huge function of this team.  The Youth Ministry Team also facilitates youth from St. John’s joining with youth throughout our synod on the first Sunday of each month for Rise-Up Nights.  The team hosts these synod-wide youth nights at least once a year.

The Youth Ministry Team typically meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:00pm.  New members are always welcome and guests with suggestions are always encouraged.  Youth and adults are welcome to join this team.  Contact Jen Kooistra, Director of Youth, Family, and Education Ministries to learn more or submit your ideas.
